Tech N9ne is a well-known American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and actor. Strange Music was formed by him and his business partner Travis O’Guin.

He has also worked with labels such as RBC, JCOR/Interscope, Qwest, Prospective/A&M, and Warner Bros. He is the rapper who has sold over two million albums and has appeared in films, television shows, and video games.

He was born to Carlton Cook, who worked in the Police Department (LAPD). His father was a bad man who abandoned him when he was young.

He was born to his mother, Maude Sue Yates-Kalifah, who died in June 2014 from epilepsy and lupus. He grew up in the Wayne Miner projects with his grandmother, uncles, and aunts.

He was immersed in music, trying to perfect his rhythm and gaining recognition as a dancer and rapper, which caused him to clash with his stepfather, who was never a fan of rap music. At the age of 17, he finally left home to live with his grandma.

Beginning of Career

Living with his grandma gave Tech N9ne the freedom to follow his dream for the first time. He proceeded to dance and sing, drawing the notice of Tanya, who would eventually go on to become rapper Sole.

Tanya invited him to join her at a rap convention in New Orleans, which led to his first break. He joined ‘Black Mafia,’ a rap group created the same year, in late 1991, when he was just 20 years old.

In 1993, he relocated to Los Angeles with a group of artists that included Dynomack and Mark Hill. They were offered their first recording contract with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Unfortunately, it did not materialize, and they returned to Kansas City disappointed.

He contacted his boyhood buddy, Brian Dennis, and announced the formation of a new band named ‘Nnutthowze.’ The group eventually formed and performed a few gigs in their area before disbanding.

In 1995, he joined his third group, ’57th Street Rogue Dog Villians,’ which was established the same year, and enjoyed brief popularity with tracks such as ‘It’s On Now’ and ‘Let’s Get Fucked Up.’ Later that year, the band issued their debut album, ‘My Dogs for Life’.

Tech N9ne joined Qwest Records in 1997, prepping for his debut album, ‘Be Warned.’ But, after the record was finished, Qwest Records chose to put it on hold, leaving him in the lurch. He joined ‘The Regime’  and made his cinematic debut on the soundtrack for ‘Gang Related.’

His debut album, ‘The Calm Before the Storm,’ was published in 1999 by Midwestside Records. Travis O’Guin, an accomplished businessman attempting to get into the music industry, approached him in 1999 with an offer to build his own company. They co-founded ‘Strange Music’ on a profit-sharing basis.

Career from 2000 to present

His second studio album ‘The Worst,’ was released in 2000. Strange Music had signed a deal with JCOR Entertainment by then, and his third studio album, ‘Anghellic,’ was released in 2001. His fourth studio album ‘Absolute Power,’ was released in 2002.

He also began writing on his second studio album, ‘Everready (The Religion),’ in 2002. the first album in the ‘Collabos’ series  Misery Loves Kompany,’ and his sixth studio album was released in 2007. He released his seventh studio album, ‘Killer,’ in 2008. In 2009, Aaron released two albums: ‘Sickology 101,’ his eighth studio album, the second in the ‘Collabos’ series, and ‘K.O.D.’

In 2010, Aaron only released one album, ‘The Gates Mixed Plate” and made his acting debut in ‘Big Money Rustlas.’ He published his eleventh and twelfth albums in 2011, ‘All 6’s and 7’s’ and ‘Welcome to Strangeland’.

His twelfth studio album, ‘Something Else,’ was also released in 2012. ‘Something Else’ was ultimately released in 2013, to critical praise. Tech N9ne began his “Independent Grind” tour in 2014, the same year he released his fourteenth studio album, ‘Strangeulation.’

Tech N9n9 had an appearance in the 2014 film Vengeance.’ He starred in two additional films the following year, ‘Night of the Living Dead: Darkest Dawn‘ and ‘Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival.’ In his sixth ‘Collabos’ album, he released two albums in 2015: ‘Special Effects’ and ‘Strangeulation Vol. II.’

Tech N9ne embarked on the ‘Independent Powerhouse Tour’ in the spring of 2016, supported by Strange members. Concurrently, he proceeded to record songs for his next studio album, ‘The Storm,’ which was published in 2016. He released his final two ‘Collabos’ series albums, ‘Dominion’ and ‘Strange Reign,’ in 2017. Planet, his most recent album, was published in 2018.
