Living with his grandma gave Tech N9ne the freedom to follow his dream for the first time. He proceeded to dance and sing, drawing the notice of Tanya, who would eventually go on to become rapper Sole.

Tanya invited him to join her at a rap convention in New Orleans, which led to his first break. He joined ‘Black Mafia,’ a rap group created the same year, in late 1991, when he was just 20 years old.

In 1993, he relocated to Los Angeles with a group of artists that included Dynomack and Mark Hill. They were offered their first recording contract with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Unfortunately, it did not materialize, and they returned to Kansas City disappointed.

He contacted his boyhood buddy, Brian Dennis, and announced the formation of a new band named ‘Nnutthowze.’ The group eventually formed and performed a few gigs in their area before disbanding.

In 1995, he joined his third group, ’57th Street Rogue Dog Villians,’ which was established the same year, and enjoyed brief popularity with tracks such as ‘It’s On Now’ and ‘Let’s Get Fucked Up.’ Later that year, the band issued their debut album, ‘My Dogs for Life’.

Tech N9ne joined Qwest Records in 1997, prepping for his debut album, ‘Be Warned.’ But, after the record was finished, Qwest Records chose to put it on hold, leaving him in the lurch. He joined ‘The Regime’  and made his cinematic debut on the soundtrack for ‘Gang Related.’

His debut album, ‘The Calm Before the Storm,’ was published in 1999 by Midwestside Records. Travis O’Guin, an accomplished businessman attempting to get into the music industry, approached him in 1999 with an offer to build his own company. They co-founded ‘Strange Music’ on a profit-sharing basis.
