The tragic incident happened during the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2001. He was killed in a three-car crash on the final lap of the race.
During the accident, he collided with Ken Schrader after making small contact with asphalt banking into the infield grass just inside of turn 4.
His and Schrader’s cars both slid off the track’s asphalt banking into the infield grass just inside of turn 4. His death was officially pronounced at the Halifax Medical Center at 5:16 PM Eastern Standard Time.
From his autopsy report, it was concluded that he sustained a fatal basilar skull fracture. So he expired on 18th February 2001 at the age of 49 approximately.
His funeral services were held on 22nd February at the Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.
