Tom is an actor and comedy writer. He mostly performs and writes for two-man shows with fellow Cowards member Tim Key. Tom has written and performed regularly for comedy series on the BBC and Channel 4.

In 2007, he starred with Tim Key in a short film The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island. This movie won the UK Film Council Kodak Award for Best British Short Film.

Also, he made an appearance as the resident musician for the second series of the BBC Radio 4 comedy show Mark Watson Makes the World Substantially Better, replacing Tim Minchin.

In November 2009, he made a guest appearance on the BBC Two Comedy show Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He played the lead role of Matt in the Netflix comedy series After Life.

In 2022, Tom Basden wrote and appeared in a BBC sitcom Here We Go, and later starred as Mr. Short in Netflix’s young adult sci-fi series The Last Bus 2022.

Tom created There Is a War in 2011 for the National Theatre’s Double Feature, starring himself and Phoebe Fox.
