What is Tyler Perry’s Net Worth and Salary? (Updated 2022)

Tyler Perry is an $800 million Net Worth American actor, director, playwright, and producer. Tyler Perry is without a doubt one of the most financially successful directors in Hollywood. Throughout his career, he has also directed and produced over 30 films, 20 stage productions, and eight television shows. He earns between $200 and $250 million per year from his vast entertainment empire. His production company currently earns $150 million per year from one deal alone with ViacomCBS.

Tyler is a self-made billionaire. He built his empire from the ground up, beginning with a single play, I Know I’ve Been Changed, which he wrote and produced. Tyler turned that play into a mini theater empire, which grew into today’s massive multi-media empire while living in his car. Tyler is the sole owner of his costs, revenues, and profits.

Early years

Perry was born Emmitt Perry, Jr., on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He did not finish high school but did obtain a GED. Tyler began writing to help heal his mental wounds after suffering abuse at the hands of several family members when he was younger. During his early 20s, an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, which described the positive and therapeutic impact writing can have on a person, inspired him to pursue a career in the field.

Writing proved to be a useful distraction for Perry. He went on to write himself a series of letters, which became the basis for the musical I Know I’ve Been Changed. This, as well as his other stage productions, quickly gained a fan following throughout Atlanta and beyond, peaking at more than 35,000 audience members per week.

Prior to making a single Hollywood film, Perry reportedly sold more than $100 million in theater tickets, as well as $30 million in related videos and merchandise.

Success in Film

Perry approached production studio Lionsgate with a proposal based on his home-grown success. Perry would contribute half of the funds for an upcoming film with a $5.5 million budget. Lionsgate put up the other half and took a small marketing fee and a 12% distribution fee. They would divide the profits after deducting the costs evenly. Diary of a Mad Black Woman, their first film under this arrangement, was released in 2005. Moreover, the film grossed $50.6 million domestically, with an additional $150 million earned from TV syndication and home video sales. Perry owns the content and keeps half of the profits as part of his Lionsgate deal.

Perry made his directorial debut in 2006 with Madea’s Family Reunion, which debuted at number one at the box office with $30.3 million. The film eventually made $65 million. (He also directed each of the subsequent Madea films.)

Tyler directed 14 “Madea” films. These films earned nearly $700 million at the box office. Each film was made for less than $10 million. Perry is able to take home the lion’s share of each of his films’ profits because he writes, directs, and produces all of his films almost entirely independently. The lion’s share of approximately $300 million.

Perry’s films are typically aimed at African Americans, and they frequently include subtle references to Christianity.

Success on Television

Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Perry’s popular sitcom, aired for eight seasons, from June 21, 2006 to August 10, 2012. The show debuted on the CW and received massive ratings for the fledgling network. TBS enticed Perry and Payne away from the CW with a $200 million production guarantee and a 90-episode commitment. Oh, and Tyler would be the star of the show. Tyler was famous for spending only $60 million on production costs. The remaining $140 million he kept for himself.

Meet the Browns, which premiered on TBS in January 2009 and ended on November 18, 2011, was also written, directed, and produced by him.

It served as a Confederate military base during the Civil War. if you have to make a decision on whether or not to get it, and you should have it in the same person.

The set of The Walking Dead has been used for filming. The studio lot is dedicated to permanent sets, which include a perfect replica of the White House, a trailer park, a luxury hotel, and a 16,000-square-foot mansion. The first film shot on the lot was the blockbuster Marvel film Black Panther.

Perry supports a variety of charitable causes and frequently lends resources to those in need outside of television and film. Perry, for example, sponsored 65 children from a Philadelphia day camp to visit Walt Disney World in 2009.

Controversy

The Writers Guild of America, West filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board alleging that Tyler Perry Studios unlawfully fired four writers in October 2008 in retaliation for their attempt to obtain a union contract. A month later, the dispute was resolved.

Perry threatened to sue a Memphis-based tax preparation company, Mo’ Money Taxes, in early 2009 for airing a television commercial that he claimed offensively parodied his work—specifically, Madea Goes to Jail. The advertisement featured Ma’Madea, a large Caucasian man dressed in drag. The television commercial was eventually taken off the air.

Real States

Perry spends the majority of his time in Atlanta, where he is currently building a sprawling new home near the Tyler Perry Studios headquarters. He reportedly intends to convert a portion of his property into an organic farm. (In May 2016, Perry paid $17.5 million for the 35,000-square-foot Atlanta mansion he had lived in for nine years.)

Perry also owns a 14,000-square-foot mansion on 20 acres on the Bahamas’ White Bay Cay island. In 2009, he allegedly paid $6.4 million for the property.

Perry sold a 10-bedroom home in Mulholland Estates, Los Angeles, that he had purchased just nine months before for $14.5 million. He sold the house to rapper and songwriter Pharrell Williams for $15.6 million.

He still has another home in Los Angeles, in the ultra-exclusive gated community of Beverly Ridge Estates. On the 22.5-acre property, Perry custom-built a 25,000-square-foot mansion. It was revealed in May 2020 that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were renting the home while establishing a new life in Los Angeles. Based on comparable nearby sales, this home is worth more than $20 million.

Tyler owns a Gulfstream III private jet, which he reportedly paid $125 million for. The plane has a screening room with a 42-inch LCD flat screen and satellite connection. He spent at least $50 million on the formal living room, kitchen, and VIP bedroom customizations and furnishings. Tyler has used the jet for philanthropic missions, delivering supplies to disaster-stricken countries on several occasions. He also owns a second private jet.

Tyler Perry’s Success Formula

Tyler later uploaded a video to YouTube in 2012 in which he answered the most frequently asked question: “How did you make it?!” Here is his response:

“There is only one answer… To be honest, it was entirely by God’s grace. Nothing but God’s grace. You could plant seeds all day. You can go around giving people your business card.  When you plant a seed in the ground, all you can do is water it, as you have no control over the sun. You can’t control the weather, and you can’t stop the locusts from destroying it. All you have to do is plant your seed, water it, and believe. That is what has allowed me to be in this position. I sowed my seed. I worked extremely hard. My only thought. My sole focus was on completing one play.

And I knew if I could get that to work everything else would come to pass. There are so many people who go in so many directions. This will be done this week. They’re going to do it next week. And they’ll be in real estate next week. They plan to open a salon the following week. Those types of people are all over the place, and I usually try to get them to concentrate on one thing at a time. Concentrate on one thing… Concentrate on just one thing. Make it a priority and commit to it no matter what…” -Perry, Tyler
