Vincent Francis Papale is a former wide receiver in the American Football League. Following two seasons with the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League (WFL), he spent three seasons playing, mostly on special teams, with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. The 2006 movie Invincible drew inspiration from Papale’s narrative.

Talking about his education, He attended Prospect Park’s Interboro High School, where he was a standout athlete in track and field, basketball, and football. He received the honors of All-Delaware County Honorable Mention during his season of varsity football play.
Papacompeted in pole vault, triple leap, and long jump as a track and field athlete. He won the pole vault large-schools title for District I (the Philadelphia suburbs) while competing on behalf of his school. He later placed fourth in the state competition. With a greatest pole vault performance of 12 feet, 9 inches, he made it into the “Top 10” all-time PA high school vaulters.
Papale was awarded a track and field scholarship, which allowed him to attend Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. At a United States Track & Field Federation (USTFF) college development pole vault tournament in his junior year, he won first place with a vault of 14 feet 6 inches.
Although he never placed on the podium at the Penn Relays or IC4A, he did place in the University Division of the Middle Atlantic Conference championships. He received his MS in marketing/management science in 1968.
Vince Papale: Professional life, Career
Now, Moving into his professional career, Vince Papale began playing for the semi-professional Aston Green Knights of the Seaboard Football League upon his graduation from college. In addition, he coached a junior varsity football team at Interboro High School from 1968 to 1974 while working as a middle school business teacher.
Papale quit his job as a teacher in the spring of 1974 to try out for the Philadelphia Bell. After being added to their starting lineup, he played for the squad for the following two seasons. He set a record that season by collecting nine receptions for 121 yards at a yard-per-catch average of 13.4. Although he only caught one ball in 1975, it went for 49 yards and resulted in a touchdown. He was recognized as a “special teams” star for both of his seasons with the Bell.
After his employment with Bell ended, Papale worked in a bar. In the bar leagues, he participated in “rough touch” football as well. Jim Murray, the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, asked him to a private workout led by Dick Vermeil around this time.
At thirty, Papale made his NFL debut for the Eagles, making him the oldest rookie in NFL history to have never played collegiate ball. He participated in 14 games as a wide receiver and special teams player in 1976, 1977, and 1978. During his tenure on the team, he recorded one 15-yard reception and two fumble recoveries.
His career was abruptly ended in 1978 by a shoulder injury. After that, he spent eight years working as a radio and television broadcaster before deciding to pursue a career in commercial mortgage banking. In addition to his present role as Sallie Mae’s regional director of marketing and senior account executive for higher education marketing, he also serves as the NFL Alumni Association’s Philadelphia Chapter’s secretary and treasurer.

In the 2006 film “Invincible,” directed by Ericson Core, Mark Wahlberg and Elizabeth played Vince and Janet, respectively. The movie did somewhat well at the box office and was well-received by critics.
After the movie came out, Papale wrote a memoir titled “Invincible: My Journey from Fan to NFL Team Captain” that told the story in his own words. The book “Be Invincible! A Playbook For Reaching Your Full Potential” was co-authored by him and Janet in 2011.
