Often, we see celebrities advocating some product or rubbishing other products without any evidence to support their claims for it. This could be harmful. Dr. Ryan Monahan from Peaceful Mountain Medicine was her chief guest in this podcast episode. Kristin said:

I want to discuss the sun and sunscreen, which I know is controversial,”

I don’ wear sunscreen, and anytime I do an interview, I get a lot of shit when I admit that I don’t. So talk to me about the health benefits of the sun and w hy we maybe don’t need sunscreen.”

Dr. Ryan is an advocate of non-pharmacological approach to various medical ailments. He replied:

“Totall y, it’s very controversial topic, which is so funny, ’cause it’s the sun,”

“Like, we’v literally spent our whole existence as humans under the sun all day until the last, like, 100 years or so. And now we’re, like, shut in, spending 93 percent of our lives indoors. That’s really bad for a lot of reasons. The sun i life-giving and nourishing.”

Alternative to sunscreens?

Kristin has her own skin care range that deals with minimalistic skin care. It goes under the term Uncommon James. She is not a fan of sunscreens and doubts its efficacy. She feels that it can interfere with the fun of the sunrays and affect production of vitamin D in the body. At one point, Kristin also stated that she uses coconut oil on her skin instead of sunscreens. However, Dr. Ryan advised to consume coconut oil in diet instead since it is anti-inflammatory and can prevent sunburns.

But this concept and notion against the sun may not be correct. Dr. Dray, dermatologist remarked on this video:

“Sunscreen and sun protection does not limit your ability to enjoy & benefit from time outdoors. #sunscreenisimportant #protectyourskin #dermatologist #greenscreenvideo @Dear Media.”

What science says?

It should be noted that whatever Kristin stated in the video lacks evidence. Health professionals recommend sunscreens to protect the skin from the damaging effects of the sun. The sun, though useful, has a lot of adverse effects on the skin. Skin cancer is one of them. In it, the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun cause DNA aberrations in the skin cells that start proliferating in a chaotic manner to give rise to skin cancer.

The American Cancer Society has stated that the average age to get cancer of skin is around 66 years. And one TikTok user who is a dermatologist also added that our ancestors did not see much of skin cancers not because they had immunity to the damaging effects of the sun. But it was because, they did not live long enough to get one. The average life expectancy in the olden days was lesser than what it is now.

One in five adults in the USA get skin cancer. In order to decrease the risk, one should stay indoors. But this might not be possible. It might deplete one of the essential vitamins that sunlight exposure produces. Hence, the best alternative is to wear a sunscreen while in the sun.

Mayo Clinic also is against fake sunscreens such as safflower oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, olive oil, jojoba, or baby oil that many quacks or celebrities recommend to be applied or consumed for sun protection.
