YouTube Vlogger Thomas Panke from Germany slapped with a lawsuit over his toy shop’s logo by LEGO!

YouTube channels have their unique ways of gathering fans and subscribers. German toy shop owner Thomas Panke owns one such YouTube channel.

The Vlogger builds and reviews LEGO company products online on his YouTube channel. The Danish firm LEGO has now sued him for using their logo in his toy shop in Frankfurt. The complete story is here!

Thomas Panke and his career

Thomas Panke is from Germany and owns a toy shop in Frankfurt which is called Held der Steine. It has more than 2 million Lego bricks and a wide range of similar toys for sale.

Thomas left his daily 10-5 pm office job 5 years back and now runs the toy shop and also vlogs on his YouTube channel. He uploads videos on this channel of his building Lego models and he also reviews them. Thomas Panke, 38 has over 160k followers on his YouTube channel.

Thomas had posted a recent review of an expensive LEGO toy. It was about the Bugatti Chiron model car which was worth £323.

The lawsuit against Thomas Panke

Following the critical review of LEGO’s pricey product, Thomas found that they had sued him. It was, of course, not for review but the court documents mention that Thomas has used their company’s logo for his shop. Thomas has used a blue Lego brick and the shop’s name features over it.

Though the company has put this as the reason for the legal action against Thomas, the toy shop owner believes that the negative review written by him and posted on his YouTube channel was the actual cause behind the lawsuit.

Thomas said of the lawsuit:

“Through a law firm, Lego has demanded that my brand logo is withdrawn at the Patent Office within a week.”

LEGO has claimed that the consumers might get confused and believe that the store’s activities are from the Danish toy giants due to the similar logo which is employed by Thomas for his shop. They might feel that it is the outlet of the toy company thus falsely helping Thomas in the sales of the toys in his shop.

Thomas Panke and his review of the car model of LEGO

Thomas has reviewed the Bugatti Chiron car model and in it, he has mentioned that the product is bad. He has also stated that the company is selling a bad product for a very high price of 370 euros. More than 159k people viewed Thomas’ review of the product.

In response to the lawsuit, Thomas stated that the local school children have drawn up the logo for his shop. They had considered the official guidelines of LEGO’s before doing the logo creation.

As regards his review, Thomas said that he always uses honest means to review a product and puts up the review even if it is a negative one. Thomas further added:

“I don’t let them send complimentary test sets to me, I am not obliged to Lego in any way. I simply review the products.”

LEGO Company’s stand

LEGO Company is adamant on its point. A spokesperson for them said:

“The company makes sure that third parties do not use anything that could dilute the Lego trademark, which we believe is the case with logos similar to ours.”

After this case, Thomas changed his logo into a caped weasel with a superhero style. He was upset with LEGO and said:

“After the action, I would like to distance myself (from Lego) and not even buy directly from them anymore.

“Building bricks from other manufacturers will now be featured in my shop and video uploads.”
