In the year, 2003, he played for the Summer Collegiate Northwoods League where he got voted the MVP.

The following year, Houston Astros drafted him at the 2004 MLB Draft as the shortstop. In 2006, the Astros traded him to Tampa Bay Rays.

On 1st August the year, he made his MLB debut with the team and played for the two seasons till 2007. However, he struggled in those seasons.

In the year 2008, he became a right fielder and shortstop for the team. The year, he made his debut in the world series.

In the world series, he played against Philadelphia Phillies. In the same year, he signed a three-year contract with the Rays worth $30 million.
