Black Eyed Peas’ new Street Livin’! Learn about Apl.de.Ap’s tough childhood and his eye problem ‘Nystagmus’ and its correction!

Everyone seems to be jumping into politics these days! The reason-divisive politics, the air of hatred and racism which are rampant worldwide!

People with some conscious of course are not willing to take things lying down! The same holds for the members of the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas.

The group has returned after a hiatus of 7 long years.

Their new venture Into Action is politically charged. Clarifying on their recent ‘Street Livin’, Will.i.am said:

“It’s not like ‘Oh, the Black Eyed Peas are back and now they’re militant. Our first big hit was ‘Where Is the Love?’ where we were talking about real stuff. From the brutality of the education system to prison reform, we’ve been out in the community. This is the work we’ve been doing.”

Street Livin is a dark and poignant musing on gun control, prison reform, and the most-talked-about American racism.

So where do the Black Eyed Peas now fit in after their return-top music chartings or frontline of activism? Will.i.am and his team members are very clear about their reasons to make the new songs.

Will.i.am said:

“Athletes have been standing up more than musicians. We have to start standing up too.”

So how were the 7 years spent?

Will.i.am released his solo record, while Taboo battled with cancer and overcame it, and what was apl.de.ap up to? Well, he had gone back to his Native Philippines and established some schools there.

Being away from the limelight for 7 years only reinforced their eagerness to do more work for the changed conditions in the USA since they left.

They were able to get the right perspective on the situation from far. They were activists even before when they started and they are only going to continue it through their music.

Their Street Livin’ seems to be rightly timed since Trump had recently made the ‘Shithole’ comment. Will.i.am said:

“Whenever you see those commercials about sponsoring a kid for a dollar a day, remember that Ap was one of those kids.”

Indeed, Will.i.am is right when he talks about Ap. His real name is Allan Pinedo Lindo and he was born on 28 November 1974 in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines.

His African-American father was an airman stationed at Clark Air Base. He deserted the family when Ap was young and Ap and his 6 younger siblings were raised single-handedly by his mother.

He used to travel an hour daily for his schooling and used to do farming to subsist for the family.

He managed to study through the one-dollar-a-day program. Allan had come to the USA for the treatment of his vision problem called nystagmus but expressed his desire to continue staying there. His sponsor Hudgens adopted him and Ap was able to pursue his other pursuit namely music here.

What is nystagmus?

It is an involuntary movement of the eyes. It may occur early in life or be a symptom in later life. Similarly, it is also called dancing eyes. Vision is affected and on those terms, Ap could not see in both eyes and was labeled as legally blind. That is also the reason he used to always wear dark glasses while performing.

Some medicines have been tried with variable success. Ap underwent surgery in 2012 to correct his far-sightedness and nystagmus. He said that he can now see clearly and it has changed his life. The surgery was shown on the Good Morning America show.
