Bob Barker passed away four months ahead of him hitting a century

RIP Bob Barker! The legendary host of The Price Is Right is no longer alive among us. He died of natural causes on August 26 in his longtime Hollywood Hills home in Los Angeles.

He died at the age of 99. His death was confirmed by his publicist Roger Neal on Saturday, August 26, on behalf of Barker’s girlfriend, Nancy Burnet.

Neal wrote in a statement,

“It is with profound sadness that we announce that the World’s Greatest MC who ever lived, Bob Barker, has left us, I am so proud of the trailblazing work Barker, and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry and including working to the plight of abused and exploited animals in the United States and internationally,”

Burnet then concludes the statement with her grief, writing, “We were great friends over these 40 yrs. He will be missed.”

Neal worked as Barker’s publicist from 1987 to 1994 and later joined again in 2020.

Bob Barker is survived by his half-brother Kent Valandra, half-nephews Robert Valandra, and Chip Valandra, and half-niece, Vickie Valandra Kelly.

Talking about his marriage life, he was previously married to Dorothy Jo Gideon from 1945 until she died in 1981. Jo Gideon died of lung cancer at age 57.

The former couple married for 36 years however, they didn’t share any children. The television host had since never remarried.

Bob Barker had battled various health problems throughout his life.

  • In 1999 –  Bob experienced what he called clumsiness in his right hand for which he was hospitalized at George Washington University Hospital. He was then diagnosed with a partially blocked left carotid artery and had to undergo a carotid endarterectomy to remove the blockage.
  • In May 2002 – He experienced a stroke while lying in the sun on May 30, 2002. He then eventually underwent prostate surgery around six weeks later on July 11, 2002.
  • In October 2015 – The ‘The Price Is Right’ host suddenly fell on a sidewalk while strolling in his Los Angeles home area. He was immediately taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he received stitches for an injured forehead and also his left knee.
  • In June 2017 – On June 19, 2017, the actor slipped and hit his head at home which led him to be taken to the emergency room.
  • In October and November 2018 – Barker was rushed to the hospital for severe back pain.

Bob Barker was an American television personality, game show host, and animal rights advocate. He was best known for hosting CBS’s ‘The Price Is Right,’ the longest-running daytime game show in TV history in 1990.

Bob hosted the show for 35 years until his retirement in 2007 at the age of 87. He told Entertainment Weekly while gushing about retirement,

“I have thought every year for the last 10 or 15 years that maybe I should quit, and then I think, ‘No, I’ll do it for another year’, I regret that I’m quitting now.”

Besides, he hosted Truth or Consequences from 1956 to 1975. He also ran his own radio show, The Bob Barker Show for almost six years.

Barker was a longtime animal rights activist as well and founded a charity, the DJ&T Foundation in 1995, which has contributed millions of dollars to animal-neutering programs.

He also worked with several supporting groups such as the United Activists for Animals, People for the Ethical Treatments of Animals, and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

He donated $1 million to move three captive elephants from the Toronto Zoo to a sanctuary in California in 2013.
