Britney Spears has always made some controversial decisions and isn’t afraid of a scandalous moment, but that’s partially why her career is as iconic as it is.
So, here are some controversial moments of Britney Spears.
The Entire Virginity Scandal
When Spears first got famous, she was also famous for her stance on her virginity insisting that she didn’t believe in sex before marriage. This became less and less believable as her career skyrocketed.
In 2003, Spears interviewed with W admitting she wasn’t a virgin, and she was also snapped walking around wearing a shirt that said,
“I’m a virgin (this is an old t-shirt.)”
Britney’s Las Vegas Wedding
After breaking up with Timberlake, Spears went on to have a string of quick romances.
She shocked everyone in January of 2004 when she went to Little White Wedding Chapel and married her childhood friend Jason Alexander.
They annulled the marriage just 55 hours later and she later referred to it as just a “silly” thing.
When she married Kevin Federline!
Spears’ love life to center stage again in 2004 when she started dating Kevin Federline, a former backup dancer for Timberlake.
She invited him on tour with her, and they got married very shortly after.
Their whirlwind relationship confused everyone and resulted in Spears getting pregnant not long after the wedding.
Britney’s Pregnancy cover shoot
Spears showed the world that she was embracing motherhood when she posed naked and pregnant on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. Almost equally as shocking, she sported black hair instead of her signature blonde.
Shaved her head
In February of 2007, Spears had the most shocking moment of her career she walked into a hair salon and shaved her head right in front of paparazzi cameras.
This came after months of bad decisions and seemed to indicate that things were going downhill for her.
Attacked the paparazzo with an umbrella
Shortly after shaving her head, she left a meeting with Federline and bashed a paparazzo’s car with a green umbrella, which was all caught on camera.
Not too long after that incident, it was revealed that Spears was suffering from a mental illness and was placed under a conservatorship controlled by her father.
Spears stole a lighter from a Van Nuys gas station
Britney walked out of a Californian petrol station without paying for a cigarette lighter.
Waiting photographers asked her if she’d paid for it, and the singer replied
“I stole something. Oh, I’m bad.”
It is not the first time Britney has reportedly not paid for something. The singer allegedly walked off without paying for a wig from a Hollywood sex shop, and she was also accused of stealing four coats from fashion designer Katja Berglund.
Britney Spears conservatorship
Spears began behaving erratically in 2007 after her divorce from Kevin Federline was finalized and she lost custody of their two children.
The singer’s career has been in the hands of legal guardians in an arrangement known as a conservatorship since 2008 when she faced a public mental health crisis.
Later, Spears condemned the arrangement, saying it forced her to use birth control to prevent her from getting pregnant.
The judge said her lawyer could file a formal petition to end the conservatorship.
