Britney Spears talks about her shaved head for the first time

Britney Spears is finally speaking about why she chopped off all her hair in 2007, ahead of her conservatorship.

The pop star writes in her much-anticipated memoir, The Woman in Me, according to an excerpt published by People on Tuesday.

“I’d been eyeballed so much growing up. I’d been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body, since I was a teenager. Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back,”

The 41-year-old also notes in the book that her estranged father, Jamie Spears took control of all her personal, medical, and financial affairs in 2008. After that, she no longer had access to her day-to-day life.

The Toxic singer writes,

“I was made to understand that those days were now over,”
“I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever medication they told me to take.”

Amid a number of stints in rehab, the pop princess walked into Esther’s Haircutting Studio in Tarzana, Calif., one night in 2007. She then told them to shave off her beautiful brunette hair.

When the salon owner, Esther Tognozzi refused to do so, Spears grabbed a clipper and gave herself a buzzcut. The paparazzi snapped pictures through the salon windows.

If that was not controversial enough, the One More Time songstress was seen attacking a photographer’s car with an umbrella.

How did Britney feel about her conservatorship?

The back-to-back controversial incidents happened while the mom of two was going through a messy divorce and custody battle with Kevin Federline. It instantly made Britney a tabloid fixture.

The following year, she was hospitalized on two involuntary psychiatric holds. It was an opportunity for Jamie to go to court and claim himself as his daughter’s legal guardian.

Spears writes in her forthcoming book,

“The conservatorship stripped me of my womanhood, made me into a child,”

“I became more of an entity than a person onstage. I had always felt music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me.”

The Grammy winner said that she didn’t deserve what her family did to her.

She further writes,

“The woman in me was pushed down for a long time,”
“They wanted me to be wild onstage … and to be a robot the rest of the time.”
