Additionally, all the murders were of sex workers. The investigations started after Shannan Gilbert, a sex worker disappeared after fleeing from a client’s home in 2010.

She was 24 at that time and had made an emergency call to 911 that lasted 23 minutes. She had said:

“They are trying to kill me.”

On 11 December 2010, the first body skeleton was discovered. Though it was not Shannan’s, police identified it to be Melissa Barthelemy’s.

Later, three more body remains were unearthed that belonged to Maureen Brainard, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. Later, investigators found six more bodies (partial or total remains).

Rex Heuermann, the suspect

The law enforcement with the FBI started following Rex Heuermann, 59 in March 2022 after finding out that he owned the Chevrolet Avalanche that a witness had seen around at the time of one of the murders.

Moreover, the cellphone call data of Rex revealed that he was in touch with three of the victims, namely, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, before their deaths.

In June this year, his email account had done internet searches as regards the police investigation of this case.

He also used his internet account to search for child pornography, sadistic materials, and images of the victims and their relatives. Moreover, a DNA study of his pizza leftovers confirms that he is likely a serial killer.

His wife’s hair was also found near the victims or on their bodies.

The Suffolk police arrested Rex on 13 July 2023 for three and probably four counts of murder. He pleaded not guilty. Rex is an architect, married, and with two kids.
