Who is Chayanne?

Elmer Figueroa Arce, better known as Chayanne, is a Puerto Rican Latin pop singer, actor, and composer.

As of now, he has released 21 solo albums and sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Elmer was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico on June 28, 1968, to his father Quintino Figueroa, a sales manager, and his mother Irma Luz Arce, a teacher.

Furthermore, he is the third of five siblings. He is of Puerto Rican nationality. In addition, he received his nickname ‘Chayanne’ during his childhood.

He was named so by his mother, in honor of his love for the 1950s television series, ‘Cheyenne’. Throughout his early life, he was raised in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico.

Talking about his education, Chayanne studied dance in one of the same schools that Michael Jackson did.

Initially, Elmer debuted as a singer at ten years of age. He became a part of a Menudo-type group ‘Los Chicos’.

The group produced several hit recordings, including ‘Puerto Rico Son Los Chicos’ and ‘Ave Maria.

Later, Los Chicos separated in 1984. Then he began his career as a solo artist. Next, he signed with RCA Víctor and released his album debut, ‘Chayanne es mi Nombre’ in the year 1984.

Elmer released his second album ‘Sangre Latina’ in 1986. Next, he switched labels to Sony Music and broke out with his first self-titled album in 1987.

This was after spending three years with RCA Víctor. Elmer released the eponymous second self-titled album, ‘Chayanne’ on November 1, 1988.

Furthermore, Chayanne released the album ‘Tiempo de Vals’ on August 7, 1990.

The album featured some of his best-selling singles such as the title track, composed by José María Cano, ‘Completamente Enamorados’, composed by Piero Cassano, Adelio Cogliati, and Eros Ramazzotti, and ‘Daría Cualquier Cosa’, composed by Luis Gómez Escolar and Julio Seijas.

Additionally, he did a tour along with Mexican Alejandro Fernández and fellow Puerto Rican Marc Anthony in 2005.
