Da Brat was born as Shawntae Harris on the 14th of April 1974 in Joliet, Illinois. Her father, David Ray McCoy, and mother, Nadine Brewer is of All-American ethnicity.

Her father, David was a businessman personality who owned several hotels and nightclubs. Back in 1988, he was brutally murdered. However, the murder is still a mystery.

She has four half-sisters, Jehlan, Morgan, LisaRaye, and Cynthia. LisaRaye is a model and actress by profession.

As a child, she was raised in two different houses by her mother and grandmother. When she lived with her granny, she used to attend the Apostolic church. In the church, she used to sing choir.

After graduating from High School, Da Brat competed in a local rap contest where she came to a winner. At the event, she met Kris Kross. Later, they have met the producer, Jermaine Dupri.

Eventually, she signed with Durpi’s recording label, So So Def. Under the recording label, she launched her first album Funkdafied which became an instant hit with the sales of million of album copies. Also, she earned Platinum certification too.

On the 29th of October 1996, she released the second studio album, Anuthatantrum. The album earned Gold Certification. Also, the album peaked at the 5th position on R&B Billboard. It also includes one of her best singles, Ghetto Love. 

In 2000, he launched her third studio album, Unrestricted with 17 tracks. It also earned platinum certification too. Moving forward, on the 15th of July 2003, she launched her fourth and the latest album, Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz. The album peaked at the 17th position in Billboard.

Apart from being a rapper, she is also an actor and producer. Back in 1994, she started his career through the short video, Funkdafied.

Moving forward, she made her appearance in the videos like Lil Bow Wow ft. Jermaine Dupri & Xscape: Bounce with Me, Mariah Carey: Shake It Off, and Star. Also, she featured in the movies like Kazaam, Rhyme & Reason, and Glitter in Cameo roles.

Apart from that, in 2017, she produced the reality TV series, Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta. As of now, she is the executive producer.
