Darrell went to Oak Grove High School. He played football for three years, basketball for two years and track for one year. Although many of his teammates received significant attention (including six who signed with Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams), Luter was not and eventually committed to Pearl River Community College.

College Career

From 2018 to 2019, he played at Pearl River, being named second-team all-conference as a sophomore. 247Sports rated him a three-star junior college recruit and one of the top 40 cornerbacks nationally.

He signed South Alabama after graduating from the school. He played 11 games in his first year with the team. Despite being the third-string on the depth chart for the most of season, he managed to tie for the team lead in tackles among players at cornerback.

Luter had a standout year in 2021, finishing third in the FBS in pass breakups. He recorded four interceptions and only allowed receptions on 26.7% of the passes thrown at him. After the season, Pro Football Focus (PFF) named him a second-team All-America selection.

In 2022, as a senior, he reached up seven pass breakups and only one interception, partly attributed to being targeted less by quarterbacks.

Luter was invited to the 2023 Senior Bowl and completed his time at South Alabama with a catch rate of just 45.3% on passes thrown his way. He recorded 17 pass breakups and was called for only six penalties.

Professional Career

In the 2023 NFL draft, Luter was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round (155th overall). However, he was listed on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start the 2023 season. Later, he was activated from the reserve/PUP on November 18.

In the third quarter of Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs, Luter was charged with a fumble when he failed to move out the way of a Tommy Townsend punt that struck his heel. On the following play, the Chiefs scored and took the lead.
