David began his music career as a guitarist with the punk band Bar-B-Que Killers. In 1985, he found a band named Mercyland in which he used to be a songwriter, guitarist, and co-lead singer. Although, the band disbanded in 1991 and he joined Buzz Hungry.

Furthermore, David Barbe joined Sugar and released a song Company Book with the band. Back in 2008, David joined Mould’s touring band for a rendition of Divide & Conquer.

Just after a year, he also collaborated with Bob Mould for a full gig at the Treasure Island Music Festival. In 2010, he became the interim director of the University of Georgia’s Music Business Certificate Program.
