Dixie D’Amelio opens up about her PMDD
Dixie D’Amelio gets candid about how it feels to live life with premenstrual dysmorphic disorder and it has impacted her mental health and relationships.
During the Season 3 premiere of The D’Amelio Show on Hulu, the 22-year-old revealed that she has to take a leave from work before her period every month because of symptoms such as anxiety and depression.
She said in a confessional video,
“People are going to be like, ‘Oh my God, everybody gets that.’ Like, no,”
“I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to want to die every month before you got your period. It’s not supposed to affect every single aspect in your life from sleep to anxiety.”
Mayo Clinic states that PMDD is “a severe, sometimes disabling extension of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)” that “causes extreme mood shifts that can disrupt daily life and damage relationships.”
The TikTok fame announced her diagnosis in October 2022. She noted that her symptoms include “losing the will to live, irritability, and anger.”
The Be Happy singer hopes that people around her can understand what is happening to her. However, the diagnosis had been hard on her relationships, especially with her younger sister, Charli D’Amelio.
Dixie said,
“It’s tough with Charli and I because she wasn’t really around when I was diagnosed, and I never really explained it to her,”
Why was D’Amelio hospitalized in May?
In another confessional, Charlie, who recently completed Dancing with the Stars last season said that she doesn’t know how to react when she sees her big sister break down.
The 19-year-old explained,
“She either doesn’t want anything to do with me or she wants me to help her,”
“It’s so confusing. I’ve done my own research on PMDD to kind of understand, at least a little bit, but she’s never really explained it to me.”
Despite opening up about her condition just last year, the TV star said that she had been suffering from the condition for seven long years before getting her answers.
During an appearance on Instagram Live, she said,
“I’m very happy that I know what’s wrong because now I can find better ways to handle my emotions,”
“I’m feeling better now, and I will probably be going through the same thing next month and the month after that,”
While she rarely opens up about her health issues, she was hospitalized in May for some unknown reason.
A source confirmed that she was treated at the hospital for dehydration.
