Elizabeth Hurley does not have very great memories of working with Matthew Perry on their 2002 film Serving Sara.

The actress described the experience as a nightmare mainly because of Perry’s drug and alcohol addiction which was at its peak.

Hurley has some very fond memories of the actor while doing the film but also admitted that they always didn’t get along well.

Talking about the 2002 rom-com, the 57-year-old actress told an entertainment publication:

“To be honest, it was a nightmare working with him at that time and, as it’s now known, our movie was shut down because of his addiction,”

“We were in a force majeure and had to all sit at home twiddling our thumbs for some time,”

Hurley noted the time was rough. Elizabeth, however, said it was wonderful to work on the film after he came back from his two-month stint in rehab despite having to scrap all of their pre-filmed scenes.

The Austin Powers star continued:

“It was tough, obviously he was having a tough time, but he was still very charming and a lovely person to work with,”

“But you could see he was suffering for sure.”

Perry also openly talked about his decades-long battle with the deadly addiction in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. There he confessed that director Reginald Hudlin and Hurley were pissed off about his situation.

Perry had to shoot the movie a second time because he had slurred his words because of his unconsciousness the first time around. In his memoir, he wrote of the movie:

“Of course, the movie tanked anyway,”

Perry believes his past addiction issues will likely take his life one day

Matthew explained times got even harder at the time and said:

“I was paid $3.5 million to do the movie and I got sued for the shutdown, even though it was a health issue. At the mediation table a team of insurance flacks faced me down, so I just wrote them a check for $650,000,”

The Friends alum explained that he had been working on the rom-com and his ABC sitcom at the same time around. It caused him to spend most of his time working and led him to spiral.

The actor noted:

“It was shot in Dallas and I was doing ‘Friends’ at the same time, so it doubled my workload. And I was flying on a private jet drinking vodka out of a water bottle,”

Perry, 53, confessed to taking 55 Vicodin a day along with Methadone, Xanax, and a full quart of Vodka at the height of his life-threatening addiction.

The actor, in fact, spent over $9 million dollars to get sober. But it was only after a near-death experience that finally made him change his ways.

He almost died four years ago after his colon burst and doctors explained that he had only a 2%  chance of surviving.

The good news is that Perry is now sober for 18 months but he believes the damage of his addiction will kill him one day.

In  the jaw-dropping memoir, Matthew concluded:

“Not only do I have the disease, but I also have it bad. I have it as bad as you can have it, in fact. It’s back-to-the-wall time all the time. It’s going to kill me ….”
