Dickerson studied at Howard University and majored in architecture. Since childhood, he has built up a strong interest in the film industry so he also took a class with Haile Gerima.

He began his career with fellow student Spike Lee from New York University. He became a cinematographer for various movies that were directed by Spike Lee.

In 1992, he also co-wrote the film ‘Juice’.  From onwards, he began as a director and has worked in several movies including ‘Bulletproof’, ‘Blind Faith’, ‘Surviving the Game’, ‘Never Die Alone, and much more. He has won a Daytime Emmy for the Outstanding Single-Camera Photography 2002 TV movie ‘Our America’.

Ernest Dickerson has also directed several television episodes including ‘Strange Justice’, ‘The Wire’, ‘The Vampire Diaries, ‘The Walking Dead, ‘Dexter’, and much more.
