- A father has been accused of intentionally driving his car off a cliff with his wife and kids inside.
- Inside Tesla were two children, a 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, and two adults, both 41. Thankfully, all of them survived.
- Officials have accused the driver Dharmesh Patel of Pasadena doing it intentionally and he is now under arrest for attempted murder and child abuse.
Dharmesh Patel intentionally drove his car off a cliff with his wife and kids inside
Rescuers, including a helicopter technician and firefighters, quickly saved the family. The children were rescued first, followed by the adults, who were then flown to a nearby hospital.
Coastside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Brian Pottenger told local TV station KTVU:
“We come out here unfortunately all too often for things like this and this was nothing short of a miracle today that they survived.”
Authorities arrested Dharmesh Patel, from Pasadena, California, for attempted murder and child abuse, claiming he acted deliberately.
The Highway Patrol said:
“CHP investigators worked throughout the night interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence from the scene. Based on the evidence collected, investigators developed probable cause to believe this incident was an intentional act.”
He will be transferred to San Mateo County Jail after hospital discharge. Patel’s Tesla’s manner of operation “does not appear to be a contributing element” in the event, according to authorities.

The victims were trapped in the car
Upon arrival, first responders found the family conscious, with the children securely in their car seats inside the wrecked vehicle.
The agency posted a video of the helicopter lowering a rescuer on a cable to the crash site while surf crashed against the rocks below. As firefighters rappelled down the cliff to the car, other first responders watched through binoculars.
As they were doing that, they were able to notice movement in the front seat through the windshield which made them hope that there were survivors.
A similar accident happened in 2018
The incident brought back thoughts of a 2018 tragedy in which a lady purposely drove an SUV carrying her spouse and six adopted children off another cliff in Northern California.
All of them died. Washington state authorities launched an investigation into claims of Jennifer Hart neglecting her children just a few days before the Mendocino County crash.
Similarly, the police are investigating Patel’s motivation. At the Mission Hills Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Los Angeles, Patel practices radiology.
