Before joining the S.L. Benfica youth system at the age of 16, he played for  Operario Lisboa.

With his strong game, he got an offer to play in the club, G.D. Estoril Prai, after which he made his senior career debut in 1973.

From 1973 to 1979, he played for G.D. Estoril Praia and made his first goal during the 1978–79 season. On September 7, 1975, he made his Primeira Liga debut.

Following he made 26 appearances with a score during his 1979-1980 season for C.S. Marítimo.

In 1980, he returned again to G.DIn., where he spent his 8 seasons. At the age of 33, he announced his retirement.

Coaching Career

Shortly after his retirement, he was assigned as the manager for his team G.D. Estoril Praia where he served for 8 years till 1994. Nextly, he was hired for the C.F. Estrela da Amadora from 1994-1998.

He also joined FC Porto in 1998 and served there as a coach till 2001. Subsequently, for a year, Fernando served the AEK Athens FC, followed by his work in  Panathinaikos FC for 4 months on mutual consent and Sporting CP for a season till 2004.

Returning back to Athens, he assisted from 2004 to 2006.

On May 20, 2006, he signed the deal with Benfica and within a short time, he signed the former Kostas Katsouranis into the club. Unfortunately, the club could not progress well, so he was replaced on August 20, 2007, by Jose Antonio Camacho.

Similarly, he then signed a 3-year deal with  PAOK FC in September 2007, and his team ranked 2nd position from 2009 to 2010 season. However, he left the team on May 19, 2010.

Greece National Team

On July 1, 2010, he was signed as the manager by the Greece National Team for 2-years and led the team in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualification.

During the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil his leadership took them to reach the knockout for the first time. Unfortunately, Greece was trounced back by Costa Rica during the penalty shootout by 3-5.

Portugal National Team

On September 23, 2014, he grabbed the position of manager for the Portugal National Team replacing the former manager, Paulo Bento.

latterly in July 2016, Santos inked another 4- time deal and led the platoon to win the UEFA Euro 2016, making the platoon, the only undefeated in the event.
