A food blogger and writer Julie Powell is no longer alive with us. Julie rose to prominence in the early 2000s for her attempt to cook every recipe in Child’s book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking: Volume 1.

She was an internet sensation becoming the first food blogger. One of her hits, the Julie & Julia project blog was made into an Oscar-nominated movie.

In 2005, she went on to write the book, Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen. The book chronicled her journey of creating every recipe in Julia Child’s book.

The late writer and director Nora Ephron adapted the book into a feature film, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.

What is Julie Powell’s cause of death?

Julie took her last breath at her home in  Olivebridge, upstate New York, on October 26 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Her husband, Eric Powell, confirmed the tragic news to the New York Times that Julie has passed away. She was just 49 years old.

As soon as the news was confirmed, her fans and friends shared their condolences online. Her editor Judy Clain penned down,

“We are sending our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Julie, whether personally or through the deep connections she forged with readers of her memoirs.”

Similarly, her other friends have described her as a “brilliant writer and a daring, original person”. Smitten Kitchen’s Deb Perelman took to Twitter to pay tribute to the late Julie. She tweeted,

“I was shocked to learn this morning of the passing of Julie Powell, the original food blogger,”

“Cooking through Julia Child’s books, she made Child relevant to a new generation, and wrote about cooking in a fresh, conversational, this-is-my-real life tone that was rare back then.”

Julie’s contributions to the food blogging empire

Her hit 2005 memoir, Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, has gone on to sell more than 1 million copies. She launched her blog on Salon.com.

Within a year of launching it had around 400,000 page views and thousands of regular readers. At the time, she appeared on Food Network’s Iron Chef America and The Martha Stewart Show. Also, she went on to write for The New York Times, Bon Appétit, and Food & Wine. Julie won the James Beard Award twice.

Talking about her academic qualification, Powell was presented with an honorary degree from Le Cordon Blue in Paris, the school Julia Child attended in 1950.

Aside from her first hit blog, she released her second book in 2009 entitled Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession. In the book, she revealed she had an affair in the year 2004.

The book is all about her pain of loving two men at once, her fondness for sadomasochism, and even a bout of self-punishing sex with a stranger. Further, she was an advocate for humanely raised and slaughtered animals for human consumption.
