‘Happy Married Life‘! Greta Gerwig has taken a milestone step in his relationship with his longtime girlfriend Noah Baumbach.

A representative for the Barbie director, 40, confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple married after more than a decade of dating.

While another source confirmed to the outlet that they exchanged vows at New York City Hall.

The wedding news comes almost five months after the couple welcomed their second son.

In July, Gerwig disclosed her wife gave birth to their second child, his third, during his appearance in Elle UK’s cover story.

The newlywed couple is also a parent to a 4-year-old son named Harold, who was born in March 2019.

Similarly, Greta is a father to a 13-year-old son Rohmer, whom he shared with his ex-wife Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Director Gerwig and his now-wife Noah met while working together in a romantic comedy-drama, Greenberg in 2010.

Gerwig co-wrote the film with his then-wife Jennifer while Noah starred as Florence, one of the main protagonists.

Greta began dating Noah in 2011, months after his split from former wife, Leigh.

The happy couple has since worked together on several projects including Frances Ha (2012) Mistress Americana (2015), and Barbie (2023).

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach had the best year of their lives in 2023. In addition to getting married and welcoming their second child, the couple got the year’s biggest blockbuster film, Barbie.

According to Box Office Mojo, Barbie went on to become the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far. The movie has garnered a total of 1.44 billion U.S. dollars worldwide since its July release.

In an October Q&A with Gerwig and Judd Apatow at a special, Baumbach discussed his reluctance to work on Barbie but eventually revealed that it turned out to be the “best thing we’ve ever written.”

“I thought it was a terrible idea Greta signed me up for,”

He recalled,

“I kind of blocked it for a while and every time [Greta would] bring it up, I’d be like, ‘You’ve gotta get us out of this.’ And then the pandemic happened,”

According to the couple, they wrote Barbie’s script in the first year of the pandemic.

They said that writing the script during an uncertain period in the film industry helped them craft the film’s creative approach to Mattel’s iconic toy brand. Greta explained,

“We were writing it when no one was going to movies and there were no movies and no one was making movies. There was also a feeling of ‘There’s no movies, nobody’s making anything.’ So there was this sort of go-for-broke quality in how we did it. Then once we were doing it, we felt like, ‘We love this — and also, definitely no one will ever let us make this.'”

He added,

“That also gave us a level of protection and fearlessness because I think at one point we were like, ‘Let’s write the greatest script nobody can ever make or no one will ever let us make,'”

Similarly, he admits that after reading a few Barbie pages, his opinion of the Margot Robbie-starring film changed. Gerwig said,

“It was Barbie waking up in her Dreamhouse and coming out to her backyard and meeting somebody who was sick and dying, I read these pages and I thought, ‘I understand now what this is.’”
