Footballer Beth Mead opens up about her sexuality; came out as gay
- Beth Mead is an English Footballer who currently plays as a forward for Arsenal and the England National Team
- She has earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for scoring the most goals at the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament
- Mead is presently dating her team-mate, Vivianne Miedema
- Recently, she openly came out as gay
Beth Mead, 27, has spoken openly about her sexuality being gay. The confirmation comes just months after Mead confirmed her relationship with Dutch Arsenal team-mate Vivianne Miedema.
England footballer and Arsenal teammate Beath confirmed the romance in an interview for The Times Magazine in August 2022. Danielle, the Netherlands native joined Arsenal in 2015, and since she has been playing with the team.
Beth, on the other hand, has earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for scoring the most goals at the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Beth has spoken about how being gay in the women’s game is challenging. She started,
“For me, when I was growing up, obviously where I came from, there wasn’t many people I knew who were out openly gay or bisexual,”
The forward player disclosed,
“My parents maybe struggled in the beginning and it was something that was hard for me to say whether it was a phase or something I wanted to act upon,”
Beth is from a little village, literally in the middle of nowhere in North Yorkshire. She then added,
“I get how difficult it is for someone people and I get that it is not always socially accepted. In the women’s game it is more norm. Actually, I’ve never physically come out and said I’m gay, I’m with a girl because I’ve not had to. I’ve just been me,”

“I’ve put pictures with my partner on social media. To me, I’ve tried to make it the normal rather than make it a statement.”
Similarly, she acknowledges that it’s even harder for men in the sport. She hopes that by setting an example she can help to build the bridge between LGBTQ+ discussions and sports.
“Obviously for the men right now, they have to put it out in the media to then see what reaction they get and I get the culture in the men’s game is still very different and it is much, much harder. But for me, I want to bridge that gap and help the men as much as the women.”
Beth Mead: Relationship history
England star Beth began a relationship with teammate Vivianne Miedema after she split with former Arsenal ace Danielle Van de Donk last year.
The former couple went official with their relationship in 2019. At the time, Beth spoke about the benefits when they became together hoping to make people feel more at ease within the game as openly gay players.
She said,
“I think if players like me and Danielle can make people feel more comfortable and proud of who they are, then that’s a good thing,”
“I think it creates an environment for people to be able to talk and speak out about who they are regardless of what anybody thinks.”
However, their relationship didn’t long last, and split up in 2021.
Mead, on the other hand, has been teammates with Miedema since May 2017. While speaking about her current relationship, Mead said in an interview with the Times last month.
“At the end of the day, you play football, you’re professional and you keep work separate. Don’t get me wrong. You’ll take things home and have a little argument every now and then. Who doesn’t? But we’re good at keeping things separate.”
