Swimming and its benefits
Taking a swim in water bodies, natural or artificial, is a form of fun and recreation. Since ancient times and several 10000-years-old rock paintings depict pictures of people swimming in water.
In the early modern era, it became one of the seven abilities of a Knight but as conservatism increased in the society, this became less popular.
Swimming gradually took the form of a science and art and the various aspects of preventing drowning during swimming and lifebelts were discussed in written and drawing forms. It took off as a competitive sport in the early 1800s.
The benefits are multi-fold. It has positive effects on the body as well as the brain. This low-impact activity is a good all-around activity that tones all the body muscles including that of the heart.
Swimming is a good cardiovascular activity. It aids in heart pumping and circulation. It strengthens all the body muscles and builds one’s endurance.
Swimming gives rise to a healthy body, mind, heart, and lungs. It relaxes and comforts the mind and diminishes stress and has a soothing effect on the brain. It is good on a hot day to cool the body.
Rihanna and her phobia of sea creatures
But did you know that there are many celebrities who do not know about swimming?
Even if they know swimming, they are afraid to do it in natural water reservoirs due to fear of the sea creatures. Rihanna is one such celebrity who had expressed to the media her extreme fear of the fish.
This fear is called Ichthyophobia. She had told The Blender Magazine that she has a paralyzing fear of fish. It is a surprise given to understand that she hails from Barbados which is an island in the Caribbean Sea and is surrounded on all sides by the sea and the fish and other sea creatures in it.
Talking about her fear, Rihanna had said:
“I’m super-scared of sea creatures. Even tiny fish. One time I was in the water — and the water in Barbados is so clear you can see your feet — I saw all these tiny fish swimming around my feet, and I had a panic attack. I just froze. This man had to lift me out of the water.”
She loves the beach but was freaked out about the sharks. During her growing years, whenever a new sequel of Jaws movie used to come out, Rihanna used to get phobic and avoid the waters totally for a few months.
She said:
“…every time a new Jaws came out I would take months off from the beach or just sit on the sand. If I happened to get in the water, my dad would hum the theme music, and I was right back out of it.”
But Rihanna overcame all her fears and dared to do an underwater photoshoot with the real sharks in the year 2015. It was for the 40th anniversary of ‘Jaws’. It was shot in Florida Aquarium in Tampa and in the tank were three live sand tiger sharks. She swam with them fearlessly and gave a splendid photoshoot.
