She shared the story of her mental and emotional abuse by a former coach.

Haney has been suspended for eight years by USA Gymnastics. He is accused of violations including an ethical code of conduct and sports policy. Laurie revealed consistent verbal and emotional abuse from Haney on her Instagram post.

She shared,

“I don’t mind sharing my story. Here’s to speaking up. This kind of behavior and treatment is never okay,”

She added,

“There are some things from my experience that will unfortunately stick with me forever, and I’ll always be working to heal from it–but sharing my story gives me a chance to close the chapter, take a deep breath, and start something new.”

Due to the abuse, she faced Maggie developed an eating disorder and depression. She was coached by Maggie from the age of 5 and she is the youngest U.S. female athlete across all sports in Rio at age 16, earning gold with the U.S. team and silver on the balance beam.
