James Wolcott is an American journalist and author. He is a cultural critic for Vanity Fair and a contributing writer for The New Yorker.

He has his own blog on Vanity Fair magazine’s main site which was awarded a Webby Award in 2007.

James Wolcott was born on December 10, 1952, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. When he was 15 years old, he murdered his mother, father, and sister at their home, in Georgetown, Texas.

However, he was not found guilty because of the reason of insanity. He is practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique since 2007.

His nationality is American and he is of North American ethnicity.

James attended Maryland’s Frostburg State College for two years. From there, he moved to New York City to work at The Village Voice.

James began his career working at the weekly paper The Village Voice, first in the circulation department answering phone complaints.

He shortly began working as a receptionist. After that, he began working as a columnist on media and pop culture for Esquire’s publication.

He then worked as a columnist for several publications such as Harper’s Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and New York Magazine.

Shortly, James Wolcott began working for Vanity Fair. He was lured to Vanity Fair by the late Leo Lerman, then the magazine’s editor.

Wolcott published his first novel titled The Catsitters, in 2001.  In 2004, he published “Attack Poodles and Other Media Mutants”, a critique of right-wing media in the United States.

In addition, he recently contributed the foreword to Geoffrey Beene’s forthcoming book, Identity.

His memoir “Lucking Out: My Life Getting Down and Semi-Dirty in Seventies New York” was published in October 2011.

In 2015 and 2016, Wolcott made 14 donations to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

James Wolcott also made a $200 donation to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Wolcott won the “PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay” for Critical Mass in 2014.
