Jimmy Buffett has died aged 76

Jimmy Buffett is no longer alive among us. The musician, who was best known for his hit Margaritaville, took his last breath at his home in Sag Harbor, New York, on the 1st of September at the age of 76.

His death was confirmed on his own social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The statement reads,

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of 1 September surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

However, the cause of his death hasn’t been revealed at that time.

Later, TMZ reported that Buffett died from skin cancer that eventually metastasized into lymphoma.

A friend of Buffett confirmed to the outlet that the musician was reportedly first diagnosed with skin cancer in around 2019. Additionally, his friend mentioned that the cause of his illness was not unexpected to those who were close to him, explaining,

“He lived his life in the sun, literally and figuratively.”

He is survived by his wife Jane Slagsvol and three children Savannah Buffett, Cameron Marley Buffett, and Sarah Delaney Buffett.

How was Jimmy Buffett’s health condition?

Jimmy Buffett experienced several health issues throughout his lifetime. Before his death, it is reported that the musician was admitted to the hospital because of which he had to cancel or postpone multiple concerts.

In May and June of 2023, he postponed his shows after announcing that he had returned to the hospital to address health conditions that required “immediate attention.”

He wrote at that time,

“I had a sudden change of pans this week that affected us all. Two days ago, I was just back from a trip to the Bahamas, thawing out from the California ‘winter tour,’ and chomping at the bit to get to Charleston, I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention.”

The singer has been experiencing health issues since last year. In September 2022, Jimmy announced on his website that he had postponed his October shows to March 2023, citing health issues and a brief hospitalization.

Remembering Jimmy Buffett’s life and legacy

Jimmy, full name James William Buffett, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, author, and businessman. He was popular for his tropical rock music that depicts a lifestyle of “island escapism.”

He was born to Mary Lorraine (mother) and James Delaney Buffett Jr. (father), on December 25, 1946. Jimmy was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, however, spent part of his childhood in Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama.

He was the eldest of three siblings. He has two younger siblings Lucy and Laurie Buffett.

Jimmy graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1969.

After graduation, he moved to New Orleans and started to perform street performances for tourists. He also played for drunken crowds in the former Bayou Room nightclub on Bourbon Street.

In 1973, he released his first record, Down To Earth.  He performed in more than 50 studios and live albums throughout his life.

Similarly, he got his breakthrough from his biggest hit, Margaritaville, which was released in 1977. His other credits music include “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise Tour,” “You Had to Be There Tour / Volcano Tour,” and more.

Throughout his music career, he received two Grammy Award nominations, two Academy of Country Music awards, and a Country Music Association award.
