May Pang talks about her relationship with John Lennon

May Pang opened up about her love life with John Lennon in a new documentary called The Last Weekend which will be out on April 13.

In 1973, Pang was living every Beatles’ fans’ dream. She initially worked for John Lennon and his then-wife Yoko Ono as their personal secretary. During the break in the couple’s marriage, Pang started dating the Beatles singer.

The initial stage of their romance was not an idyllic honeymoon for the then 23-year-old. Pang, now 72, reveals in her new documentary that she cried the first time she and Lennon slept together.

She said,

“I didn’t know where it was going to lead,”

“I was like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ I was very content in working. [But] he kept saying, ‘I don’t know where this is going to lead, but let’s just do the jump.’

From thereon, the two embarked on an 18-month-old  romance from 1973 to 1975. Lennon later called it his “lost weekend,” a reference to the 1945 Billy Wilder film.

Though their fling did blossom into love, the origin became less than traditional.

John, who was 10 years Pang’s senior was married to Yoko, now 90, for four years. Then their marriage hit a rough patch.

During the break, Ono said she wanted some time off alone. She then wanted May to be with Lennon as his girlfriend.

May said,

“I refused,”

“I respected their marriage. I said, ‘That’s not what I want to do.’ I was very happy as a worker.”

“He loved to get up, have his coffee in the morning. He loved blueberry pancakes, he loved swimming. He was just an awesome person who wanted to discover things.”

The new lovebirds even bonded over music “the one thing that [Lennon] loved the most.” The two even spent time jamming with  Lennon’s bandmates Paul McCartney and George Harrison.

May recalled,

“George once said, ‘I’m so happy you’re with John,’ and that was a nice thing of him to say to me,”

Though Lennon agreed to divorce Ono in 1974, it never happened and they saved their marriage in 1975.

The split was extremely difficult for May who believes “there wasn’t any” sense of closure. The two spent romantic time over the next half a decade until the singer’s tragic death in 1980.
