Leiber was born in Budapest, Hungary on January 11, 1921, to parents Helene and Emil. Additionally, she also had a sister named Eva.

She later left her hometown for King’s College London in 1938. She was of American-Hungarian nationality. Furthermore, there are no details about her ethnic background.

Leiber received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers in 1994. Additionally, she also received a Visionary Woman Award in 2010 from Moore College of Art & Design.

She died on April 28, 2018, at her home in Springs, New York. This was just a few hours after her husband Gerson Leiber had died.
