Later he played for the team of the University of Southern California from the year 2014-2016, in his career game he had four receptions for 123 yards against Fresno State.

Later In 2017, he joined the NFL draft where he was invited to the NFL combine where he performed various drills and also worked privately with Dallas Cowboys. Dallas Cowboys is the only team to arrange a private workout with him as they saw a great future footballer in him. He played in 13 games with 914 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

In the second round of the NFL draft, Pittsburgh Steelers recruited Smith as the 62nd player. The club offered him a four-year contract worth $4.19 million also with a signing-on bonus of $1.19 million and a guaranteed $1.84 in his salary. From thereon, Smith joined the Steelers as a sixth wide receiver in their squad.

The squad also had to store players such as Eli Rogers, Justin Hunter, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Antonio Brown, and MArtavis Bryant ahead.
