Peterson turned professional in 1982 and joined the LPGA Tour in 1983. Her first LPGA Tour win came in 1990 at the Mazda LPGA Championship, a major championship. She won her second LPGA Tour event later in the year at Rochester International.

In 1992, Lauri was a member of the United States Solheim Cup team. She played in one match, a four-match in which the United States won.

In 1994, Peterson was again a member of the US Solheim Cup team. She played in three matches, winning one and halving one.

Lauri has not won an LPGA Tour event since 1990. She has had several top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish at the 1998 Chick-fil-A Charity Championship.

Lauri Merten is an active member of the LPGA Tour and is currently playing on the Legends Tour.
