Mary Jo Eustace said parenting is tough being a single mother

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Mary Jo Eustace shared that raising children in the public eye being a single parent is challenging.

The Canadian podcast host, 61, has two children Jack, 24, whom she shared with her ex-husband Dean McDermott, and Lola, 17, who is adopted.

She told the outlet,

“I would not wish that on anybody, quite frankly, Because the divide between what’s actually happening and what’s presented is great. And the soundbites and innuendos and everything [have] very little to do with the reality of what’s going on. It’s been disorienting the whole time because you have your life and then you have how it’s perceived in the media and there’s a big, huge difference between what is actual and what is not.”

She went on to say that she “feel bad for any child or family who has that extra dimension” because it can be “disorienting.”

Eustace and McDermott has a very publicized divorce in the year 2005. They called it quit on their marriage after 13 years of togetherness. A year after their divorce, the 56-year-old actor married his Mind Over Murder costar, Tori Spelling.

The two shared five children together Liam, 16, Stella, 15, Hattie, 11, Finn, 10, and six-year-old Beau.

Mary Jo Eustace claimed she raised her children on her own

Despite the fact her children are celebrity kids, Mary prefers to raise them out of the public eye. She alleges that Dean McDermott left her to do “most” of the parenting on her own.

Eustace shared with the outlet,

“It wasn’t part of my life with them. Let’s put it that way. They’re not characters in a movie. They’re real people. So, I don’t want them perceived in any way that they’re not. There wasn’t a lot of co-parenting. I did most of it on my own.”

She went on to say that, while McDermott does occasionally appear in photos of their family gatherings on her Instagram page, “practically speaking, it just didn’t [exist].”

In addition, she appreciates what being a single mom has taught her, explaining,

“I’m a great parent, I had great support from amazing people and my family. It was a great experience. It made me the person I am today. I have empathy for people who’ve been in the same situation. I have a lot of friends who are single parents and it’s the hardest job in the world.”

She continued,

“[There’s] no victimhood here. It was a different path, and I did my best with it. The good, the bad, the ugly, all of it. I own all of it. We’re at a great place.”

What are her children into nowadays?

Eustace praised Lola for being a “hard worker” and said she would begin studying pre-medicine at Washington State University this year.

“She’s applying for 9 million scholarships,”

She also mentioned how pleased she is of her son Jack, who is preparing for law school.

“He’s amazing — doing really well. He’s going to do his LSATs for law school because I’ve always emphasized education,”

Besides, she acknowledges she and her son have already moved past it. In December 2022, Jack wrote, and later deleted, an Instagram post accusing Eustace of putting “strain” on their “family dynamic”.

The podcast host and mom of two says,

“I adore him. I love him. We have an incredibly strong relationship. We always have. He is doing very well, being in proximity to a situation that would be difficult to navigate for any young [man]. So, I’m very proud of him and we’re at a wonderful place.”
