In a June 14 special election, Mayra Flores overturned the longtime Democratic stronghold leadership in Texas’s 34th congressional district.

Additionally, Mayra Flores, 37  came to the US at the age of 6. She only became the first congresswoman-elect to be born in Mexico after attaining citizenship at age 14.

Why did Mayra Flores elect amidst Rep. Filemon Vela’s mid-term tenure?

Former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela left his South Texas seat vacant in March to join a law and lobbying firm in Washington. Moreover, Mayra Flores is the new replacement for the former representative.

Mayra won the seat amidst 3 other competitors after the 2020 election South Texas seat become vacant. Flores will continue the mid-term tenure until January 2022.

Flores had led her top Democratic opponent, Dan Sanchez’s campaign and she also wrote on Facebook about winning saying,

“This win is for the people who ignored for so long! This is a message that the establishment will no longer be tolerated! We have officially started the red wave!!” 

Flores defeated Dan Sanchez with 50.98% of the vote after spending $752,000 in contributions to her pre-election campaigns.

A Glance at Mayra Flores’s Early Politics

Flores worked in the Hidalgo County Republican Party as chair of Hispanic outreach shortly after her graduation in 2019.

For her entire life, she grew up with conservative values as a result she stepped into politics. Flores joined the Republicans due to her anti-abortion views though her parents supported the Democratic Party.

Likewise, the Republican representative Flores used hashtags associated with the QAnon conspiracy theory on an Instagram post but she has denied being part of it.
