American actress, Megan Hilty lost her close ones in a tragic accident one year back. On their one-year death anniversary, Megan spoke about this tragic incident in their family and remembered and paid homage to the departed souls.

The tragic accident on Whidbey Island

On 4 September 2022, a seaplane that Renton-based charter service Northwest Seaplanes owned and Friday Harbor Seaplanes operated was on its journey from Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands to Renton. And it crashed killing all ten travelers on board the floatplane.

On board this ill-fated plane were three family members of American actress, Megan Hilty. These included her sister, Lauren Hilty who was 39 at that time and pregnant. Also on board were Lauren’s husband, Ross Andrew Mickel, 47 and their toddler son, Remy, 22 months. Ross was a renowned Washington vintner who founded the Ross Andrew Winery. Moreover, Spokane civil rights activist Sandy Williams, 60 was also on the same seaplane. Sandy was founder of a community center and had started a Black newspaper.

The plane that crashed was supposedly recently serviced but did not have a flight recorder. The plane had disappeared from the radar at 3 pm. It had crashed into Puget Sound near Whidbey Island and soon after sank into the deep, cold waters of Mutiny Bay. The Coast Guard searched the whole area and found only a single body that was of a woman. Besides this, they recovered a few parts of the single-engine de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Turbine Otter.

They suspended the search operation on Monday because a person could survive for not more than six hours in that water temperature. The wreckage seems to be on the seafloor which is 150 to 200 feet below the water level.

Statement from Megan Hilty, and Hilty and Meckel families

Mickel and Hilty families issued a statement on 5 September 2022 that said:

“We are deeply saddened and beyond devastated at the loss of our beloved Ross Mickel, Lauren Hilty, Remy and their unborn baby boy, Luca,”
“Our collective grief is unimaginable.”

The families thanked the Coast Guard, friends and supporters. At that time, Megan Hilty had put up a post on her Instagram:

“The last three days have been the worst of our lives. There are truly no words to appropriately convey the depth of our grief.”

First death anniversary: Megan remembers her deceased family members

On their first death anniversary, Megan remembered her sister, brother in law and nephew. She was at the Project Angel Food’s Angel Award in September 2023 when she told The Messenger:

“It’s been really helpful to get through it as a family. My family has really, really come together to support each other on every anniversary, every holiday that you know, none of them are easy. Yeah, but we have such a solid awesome core family that we’re always just grateful for each other,”

This project raises donations to assist cover the money needed to prepare and deliver foods for 125000 people who are affected with life-threatening diseases.

The Broadway star will do a comeback next year. She will play Meryl Streep’s role in the new adaptation of Death Becomes Her. Megan is excited and stated:

“I’m so excited to see what all of these writers have done,”
“It’s so smart. It is so funny, the music is so great. I’m just really thrilled for the audiences to see it.”
