Missy Elliott creates history at the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Missy Elliott made history at the 38th Annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony. She became the first female rapper to receive the honor of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The event took place on Friday, November 3, at Barclays Center in New York City.
Queen Latifah, praised the Virginia rhymer for her ground-breaking collaboration with producer Timbaland as well as her breakthrough rap album Supa Dupa Fly.
Latifah said,
“We had never heard anything like that in our lives, They opened the door to new possibilities in all aspects on contemporary music, very much including rock and roll, but trust me, nothing sounded the same after Missy came on the scene.”
“Trust me, Nothing. All the kick snares, everything changed. The bass lines changed, the pockets changed, the cadence, the writing. And that’s because Missy has always been a futurist, someone who’s always looking ahead. She is avant-garde without even trying.”
For the event, Elliott is dressed in a flattering gold outfit.
Elliott gives a powerful induction speech while performing at Rock Hall
Missy gave a powerful acceptance speech, honoring various women in rap who paved the way and motivated her to become an artist herself. She said,
“First of all, I’m not even gonna start without thanking God, I’ve been through so many ups and downs and I know where my gifts come from. God has brought me all the way here. He has allowed me to meet some incredible people along the way.”
“All of these people have impacted people around the world through their music, Sometimes I be like, do people really realize, like through music, what music do with people? That’s the one thing I think we can all say that comes together is music.”
Besides, she discussed the significance and impact of hip-hop celebrating its 50th anniversary. She told the rapt audience,
“This is the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, so this is deeper than me just being up here. You just feel like it’s so far to reach when you’re in the hip hop world and to be standing here, it means so much to me,”
In addition, she performed a medley of her hits, including “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” and “Get Ur Freak On.”
