Monty Don’s journey: Finding peace and purpose after health struggles
In 2008, Monty Don experienced a minor stroke, which led him to resign from his role as the presenter of Gardeners’ World.
He later expressed in an interview that he did not want to be remembered solely as “the man who was ill.” He reflected on this experience by stating,
“I don’t work so hard now, and when I do things I do them on my terms. Psychologically, I’ve tried to put it behind me but, yes, I became very aware of my mortality and that was very real.”
Since 2003, Monty has been the host of Gardeners’ World, a show cherished by gardening enthusiasts.
In recent years, he has openly discussed his mental health struggles, including his battle with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which significantly affects him during the cold months.
In December of last year, he shared on Kate Thornton‘s White Wine Question Time podcast that November and December are particularly challenging for him due to the lack of light and the oppressive greyness that drains his energy.
BBC Gardeners’ World star said on the podcast,
“I was long ago diagnosed with SAD – there’s no question about it, that November and December are always the worst time for me – I can’t bear them. It’s a lot to do with the greyness, the lack of light and the general sense of the world just pressing in on you and no energy.”
In April, Monty revealed that he is ready to adopt a slower lifestyle and has considered stepping back from Gardeners’ World.
He previously hinted at this decision in an interview with Radio Times Magazine. At the time, he noted that leaving the show might be a logical step due to its demanding nature.
The TV presenter further expressed a desire to focus on projects like writing and travel shows instead.
Monty desires a quieter life where he can select work projects based on his preferences. In an interview with Abode2 Magazine, he mentioned that he is now inclined to take on fewer projects and work at a pace that suits him.
He said,
“I don’t tend to work quite so hard these days, and when I do take on project, I do them on my own terms. At my age now, I’m ready to embrace a quieter, slower pace of life. Watching garden life flow by, what it’s all about.”
Similarly, Monty revealed that he never intended to pursue a television career. As it was an unexpected opportunity that led him there. He explained,
“I’ve always had this policy in life. If you say no, you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering what might have happened. If you say yes, you’ll find out.”
