Fortner was appointed to the University of Texas Women’s Athletics Wall of Honor in November 2001. She was also inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame at the same time.

While coming to her coaching career, she has been coaching at the high school, college, pro, and international levels for more than two decades. She began her coaching career at Killen High School, Texas.
