Padma Lakshmi concerned for her former husband Salman Rushdie’s health

Padma Lakshmi, Salman Rushdie‘s ex-wife posted a touching message on Twitter after the news that the author was taken off a ventilator.

An unknown man stabbed The Satanic Verses author in the neck on Friday at a literary event at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, N.Y.

After the attack, the novelist fell to the floor and the man was restrained.

She expressed her relief that Salman is now improving after the incident on stage as he was about to give a speech on Friday, August 12.

On Sunday morning, the Top Chef host wrote:

“Relieved @SalmanRushdie is pulling through after Friday’s nightmare. Worried and wordless, can finally exhale. Now hoping for swift healing.”

Lakshmi and Rushdie first met in 1999. The pair married from 2004 to 2007 after nearly 5 years of relationship. It was Rushdie’s fourth marriage and her only.

In an interview given o People magazine in 2016, Padma gushed over her ex-husband saying:

“For us Indians, he’s like Hemingway,”

“Imagine a young woman in her twenties, who loves books and and who had published her little cookbook and in comes this guy. I mean, he was the best thing that ever happened to me by a mile. The fact that somebody of that stature and caliber was even interested remotely enough in me to want to take me to lunch was kind of unbelievable.”

Lakshmi gets candid about their divorce

The Indian-American writer feels that her severe undiagnosed endometriosis led to chronic pain resulting in their divorce.

She confessed:

“Endometriosis was definitely a major reason that my marriage failed and I don’t think either of us understood it at the time.”
“I think that’s also because I hid it to a certain degree, not intentionally but you know, it’s weird to talk about your period all the time. It’s like the least sexy thing in the world to do.”
”I think that Salman took it personally and I think that he felt rejected.”
“I can understand that.”

Even after their divorce, the couple remained good friends and Salman was always supportive of her even when she shared intimate details about their marriage in her 2016 memoir.

The television host recalled:

“I told him, ‘I just want you to know that I talk about the demise of our marriage and I talk about it because I really wanted to talk about endometriosis and also that you were a huge part of my life,’”
“And he said, ‘You have the right to tell your side of the story as you see it.’ ”
