Prince William and Princess Catherine receive a warm welcome at Celtics Game in Boston
On Wednesday night, Prince William and Princess Catherine gave their American royal fans the most beautiful surprise at the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat Game.
The royal couple shocked basketball fans when they paid a surprise visit at the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat game.
Wycliffe Wyc Grousbeck, the lead owner of the Boston Celtics, received the royals before they sat courtside.
Massachusetts Governor-Elect Healey and Celtic legend Thomas Satch Sanders accompanied the 40-year-old royals to the games.
The Prince and Princess of Wales arrived on American soil on Wednesday for a three-day trip for The Earthshot Prize ceremony which will take part on Friday. The Prize is a means to find and grow solutions for global warming.
Despite their packed schedule, Wills and Kate were eager to meet their fans who were still shocked by seeing them. As fans cheered for them and welcomed them to America, the couple was flashed on the Jumbotron.
Fans also saw nods to the arrival of The Earthshot Prize, including the Celtics’ tradition of recognizing Hero Among Us during each game.
The hero of the night was a 15-year-old climate activist, Ollie Perraul, from Easthampton. She has been a leading member of the Youth Climate Leadership Program since she was 11. Perraul is the founder and director of Youth Climate Action Now.
William and Catherine paid a tribute to the late Queen in Boston
The royals were also due to meet representatives of the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, which provides strategic funding to local organizations.
Most importantly, Wills and Kate were keen to learn more about the Curbside Care mobile unit. The unit has a partnership with Boston Medical Care which will provide streamlined care to mothers and infants in the first six weeks of life on their doorstep.
The royals landed in Boston for the first time since 2014. They also paid a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II shortly after landing in the city.
While giving a speech at Boston City Hall, William said:
“Catherine and I are delighted to be back in the United States and are extremely grateful to Gov. Baker and the first lady of Massachusetts for their warm welcome into Boston,”
“On this, our first overseas visit since the death of my grandmother, I would like to thank the people of Massachusetts and particularly of Boston for their many tributes paid to the late Queen. She remembered her 1976 Bicentennial visit with great fondness.”
The Prince concluded:
“My grandmother was one of life’s optimists. And so am I. That is why last year we launched the Earthshot Prize with the ambition to create a truly global platform to inspire hope and urgent optimism as we look to save the future of our planet.”
The royal US visit comes just days after William’s godmother, Lady Susan Hussey stepped down from her royal duties after facing accusations of racism.
