Will Princess Beatrice lose her title after her marriage to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi?

In July 2020, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Beatrice wed her fiance, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Unfortunately, the wedding was not a normal one due to the raging coronavirus pandemic.

It was an intimate affair with only selected close family members in attendance. Princess Beatrice and her sister Princess Eugenie got the title of Princess after their births. But will their titles change after their marriage?

Princess Beatrice’s wedding and title

The elder daughter of Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice walked down the aisle this July with her fiance and now husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Unlike the other marriages of the royal family members, this was an intimate affair.

The reason was the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The wedding took place at Windsor Castle but behind closed doors. Only close family members could attend it. The Queen and her husband, Prince Philip were guests on the occasion.

In 1917, King George V decided that the title of a Prince or a Princess would be given to the children of the monarch or the children of only the male heirs of the monarch.

Hence both Beatrice and Eugenie fulfilled these criteria and were titled, Princess. Their father Prince Andrew is also Duke of York after his marriage to Sarah Ferguson.

The wedding of the couple

Beatrice was officially called  Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York before her wedding to Edoardo. And the couple engaged last year and were to wed earlier this year.

But it got postponed and then ultimately happened in July 2020. The Royal Family posted a photo of the couple outside the chapel on their official Instagram and captioned it:

“Congratulations to HRH Princess Beatrice and Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi!

“The couple was married in a small private ceremony at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge, Windsor on Friday 17th July.

“Princess Beatrice and Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi celebrated their wedding with their closest family.”

Will Beatrice’s title post-marriage change?

The younger sister of Beatrice, Eugenie wed in the year 2018. Her husband is Jack Brooksbank. The new court circular states that her new changed name is Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Jack Brooksbank.

Along similar lines, Beatrice will also get the name of Princess Beatrice, Mrs. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. She will no longer have the term York in her name. But both sisters will continue to retain the Her Royal Highness before their names.

The two daughters of Prince Andrew are having Her Royal Highness before their names. Yet both are not working members of the Royal Family. And the reason for this is that both have their independent careers.

Also, by tradition, the new bridegroom gets a new royal title after their marriage into the royal household. But neither Jack nor Edoardo got these new titles. But it is also common these days for royal couples to forego these titles and not take them.

Earlier, Princess Anne’s husband, Captain Mark Phillips also had refused any new royal title for himself when he wed into the family in 1973.
