Ryan Kelly and his wife Emma are expanding their family. The couple confirmed the PEOPLE on Saturday, May 27, that they are expecting twin boys.

The pregnant mama, 33, told the outlet,

“My gratitude, I can’t even tell you. There was a time when I really wasn’t sure if we were going to get here. I am literally so grateful for each day.”

The exciting news comes nearly two years after Emma experienced a pregnancy loss at 19 weeks along.

Emma opened up about the challenges she is going through mentioning it has been a “tough pregnancy physically”. Similarly, she described their twins as “miracles”.

She explained,

“There’s a lot more risk involved this time. I was on bed rest for my first trimester, which was really tough and took a lot out of me. But at the end of the day, every bit of it has been worth it — to feel them and watch us grow.”

Further, she noted that the pair just marked a “bittersweet” milestone, sharing,

“There’s a lot of emotion involved right now with just surpassing that bittersweet milestone. And now, making it further than ever,”

She then went on to reflect on the immediate aftermath of her miscarriage, revealing,

“I remember sitting in the hospital bed after giving birth and they took her away from me, and I was like, ‘I can’t live like this.’ The emptiness of it, I remember feeling so broken.”

Adding to that the NFL player said sharing their painful story with the world ultimately helped them grieve and heal. He said,

“We felt like the only ones there, but then you hear people’s stories and it helped us tell ours and keep our daughter’s name alive, to honor her in a sense. It certainly contributed to our healing.”

Emma experienced a tragic pregnancy earlier

In December 2021, Ryan Kelly took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news that his wife Emma suffered a miscarriage of their first child a baby girl named Mary Kate.

Emma was 19 weeks pregnant when she discovered her daughter’s “little heart just stopped for reasons unknown” and would have to deliver that baby.

She gave birth to Mary experiencing 24 hours of labor. Sadly, the child didn’t survive.

Ryan shared a series of pictures from the hospital including a shot of Mary’s tiny handprint and a picture of the couple looking at their baby.

Alongside the photos, he wrote in the caption section,

“Nothing made me happier than being your Dad. You gave your Mom and I that gift. You were simply a miracle and always will be. I’m sorry you never got to open those sweet eyes and see us or take your first steps but you have angel wings now,”

He continued,

“You left this world too soon but we know God had a bigger purpose for you. Your mom and I find comfort knowing you’re being loved on by your great grandparents. Thank you for watching over us and your future siblings. I’ll forever wonder who you’d be today. Until we meet again my sweet girl, I love you.”
