Sapphire was born on August 4, 1950, in Fort Ord, California, United States. She has three siblings and her parents were in the army. Talking about her childhood, it was not easy at all.

Talking about her education, the Push novelist dropped out of high school and moved to San Francisco. Later, she completed her graduation from the City College of New York with an MFA degree from Brooklyn College.

After completing the 100 pages, in 1995, a publisher offered her $500,000 to finish the novel. Later, a movie named Precious was released on the basis of the novel. Many famous names were in the movie which includes Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Gabourey Sidibe, and Mo’Nique. Additionally, she also released The Kid, a semi-sequel to Push.
