He formed the band Ghistor while he has in college. However, after graduation, they disbanded. In March 2000, they again reformed and named their band Stellastarr. On July 3, 2000, the band made their debut performance.
Over the next three years, the band became more and more popular in New York City. In addition, they also performed at venues like Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom.
In May 2003, the band signed with RCA Records and allowed him and the other band members to focus on their music careers.
They released three albums under the RCA label from 2003 to 2005. Following the release of their third album, Civilized, the band unofficially stopped making any work.
Filmmaking
While his band Stellastarr was on tour along with The Killers throughout the U.S. in 2004, he collaborated with his friend Jason Dolan on a spec script for a drama titled Sidney Hall, which he shared with Paul Wesley, who eventually presented it to William Morris Endeavor and signed both Shawn and Jason. Additionally, they also collaborated on several other spec scripts during the mid-2000s, which included a psychological thriller called Enter Nowhere.
On February 10, 2010, his screenplay for Abduction became a hit. It started a bidding war and Lionsgate Films won a bidding war for nearly $1 million. Lionsgate hired writer Jeffrey Nachmanoff to rewrite the screenplay and the movie started its production the next July.
Moreover, he wrote a screenplay in 2011 for a short film for him to direct and co-star in a movie called Curfew. It is undoubtedly the most successful movie he has ever created as it would later win him an Academy Award. He completed its shooting in a week. The movie premiered at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival on January 28, 2012. Curfew won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.
After its mainstream success, he took an interest in the short films and he and his creative partner, Damon Russell, collaborated to develop a feature-length adaptation of the hit movie. The movie was titled Before I Disappear and it premiered at South by Southwest on March 10, 2014.
His movie Sidney Hall premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah on January 25, 2017. Later, it was re-titled ‘The Vanishing of Sidney Hall’ and it had its theatrical release on March 2, 2018.
