Who is Simone Forti?

Simone Forti is an award winning  American Italian Postmodern artist, dancer, choreographer, and writer.

She has exhibited, performed, and taught workshops worldwide since the 1950s. Her Postmodern dance innovation includes her seminal 1961 body of work, Dance Construction, and her contribution to the early Fluxus movements.

Forti trained with Anna Halprin and since then worked with many artists and composers such as Trisha Brown, peter Van Riper, Dan Graham, and many others.

Simone also published her books, Handbook in motion, The press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and design, Angel, and oh Tongue in 2003.

The famous American Italian artist Simone Forti was born in Florence, Italy on 25 March 1935. Simone was born into a Jewish family, to Milka Forti and Mario Forti.

Anna is her older sister. Forti’s parents had to leave Italy to escape anti-Semitic persecution in 1938. Forti’s family crossed the border and spent the next six months in Switzerland.

Later in early 1939, they sailed to the United States and settled in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, she attended Gardner Street Elementary School.

Then Simone Forti enrolled in John Burroughs Middle School and Fairfax Senior High School. After graduating from high school she went to Reed College in Portland Oregon.

After 2 years in college, she moved to San Francisco with her partner artist Robert Morris. She enrolled in the Halprin-Lathrop School to learn Dance.

Simon Forti started her career as a dancer in the mid-1950s. During this time period, she was learning dance from Anna Halprin.

Anna was beginning to explore new forms of contemporary dance rejecting the structured choreography of modern dance in favor of improvisation and everyday movements.

After moving to New York she started working with her close friends at Judson Dance Theater. She debuted her Dance Constructions in 1960 at Yoko Ono’s Loft.

Simone Forti developed the jer Dance Construction series and publicly presented it at Reuben Gallary in New York in 1960.

After a year she presented a full evening piece, Five Dance Construction, and Some other Things.

Throughout her career, she has won a lot of awards. She has had a very successful career. Forti was awarded for the first time in 1976, New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) CAPS Grant.

In 2023 she was awarded Golden Lion at Venice Biennale for lifetime achievement in the field of Dance.
