Update: ‘General Hospital’ actress Sonya Eddy died following post-surgical complications

General Hospital actress Sonya Eddy died earlier this week at just the age of 55. Her death was confirmed by her friend and actress Octavia Spencer with a heartbreaking statement.
Spencer was the first to publicly shared the news of Eddy’s demise. Later on, “General Hospital” executive producer Frank Valentini also confirmed her death in a separate statement saying that he was “heartbroken about the loss”.
Sonya was best known for her performance on “General Hospital” had been portraying nurse Epiphany Johnson. She had been appearing on the soap opera since 2006. Similarly, she played the role in the spinoff “General Hospital: Night Shift”.

Further, she appeared in numerous TV shows and films including “Seinfeld”, “Patch Adams”, “Reba”, “Monk”, “Joan of Arcadia”, “CSI”, and more.
Sonya Eddy: The cause of death revealed
The cause of Sonya Eddy’s death has now officially been made public days after her passing. Her producing partner and close friend Tyler Ford confirmed to TMZ that Sonya died from an infection after surgery.
Ford went on to explain that the ‘General Hospital’ alum had a non-emergency scheduled surgery on the 9th of December. He said she was then released from the hospital on the 11th, however, Eddy began to feel ill and returned to the hospital on the 15th.
It was at that moment that doctors discovered Eddy had developed an infection that became uncontainable. After she has been placed on life support for less than a day, Sonya passed away.
Similarly, Page Six reported that ABC conveyed condolences and tributes to the beloved actress Sonya Eddy. The heartfelt report reads,
“General Hospital’ is sad to confirm the passing of actress Sonya Eddy, who embodied her character … the tough but compassionate, head nurse, Epiphany Johnson …,”
“And immediately became a fan favorite and beloved member of our ‘GH’ family when she joined the show in 2006.”
