Jon Batiste, 35, and his longtime girlfriend Suleika Jaouad, 33 are officially husband and wife.

On Sunday (April 3), the five-Grammy-winning musician and author disclosed the news that they were secretly married in February this year.

Batiste took home five Grammy Awards including the biggest award of the night, winning album of the year for WE Are on Sunday night.

While speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, Suleika said to Correspondent Jim Axelrod.

“We got married the day before I was admitted to the hospital to undergo my bone marrow transplant,”

How long have Jon Batiste and Suleika Jaouad been dating?

The couple has been together for almost eight-year now. Jaouad said,

“We have known that we wanted to get married, I think, from the first week that we started dating. That’s when Jon first brought up the topic of marriage to me. So, we’ve had eight years”

The author of the bestselling cancer memoir, ‘Between Two Kingdoms’ then slightly joked, “This is not, you know, a hasty decision!”. The ceremony took place the day before Jaouad’s bone marrow transplant as she was diagnosed with Leukemia back in November for a second time.

Suleika described the ceremony as private only four people were present. She stated,

“We had this tiny, beautiful little ceremony. We didn’t wedding bands, we used bread ties,”

Is Jon proposing to Suleika because of her diagnosis?

Obviously not, Batiste clarified that Batiste told her a proposal had been in the works months before her second cancer diagnosis. She explained,

“He said to me, ‘I just want to be very clear, I’m not proposing to you because of this diagnosis. It’s taken me a year to design your ring. So, just know this timing has nothing to do with it. But what I do want you to know is that this diagnosis doesn’t change anything. It just makes it all the clearer to me that I want to commit to this and for us to be together,'”

She added,

“But once we realized we had this tiny window before the bone marrow transplant, we decided to go for it.”

Similarly, Batiste assured his new bride that her diagnosis is not going to interrupt the plan that he has.

He said,

“This is just a bump in the road”.
