The Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, Reportedly Cutting Down the Public Executions Amid the Fear of Growing Unrest in the Country
  • North Korean authorities are ostensibly carrying out fewer public trials and executions of its citizens accused of derelictions.
  • The move seemingly is due to the concern that “brutal” treatment could trigger a wave of public dissatisfaction.

But is the country really going into a public uproar? We will try to learn about this in the current session.

The Past

“Until last year, individuals accused of sowing discontent or creating social disorder through offences such as cutting into electric lines [to steal power], watching South Korean media, or attempting to defect, underwent public trials and execution by firing squad”,

a source in North Korea’s North Hamgyong Province told the Seoul-based Daily NK website.

“But this year, the Ministry of State Security and the Ministry of People’s Security have been laying low.”

As well as executing ordinary citizens, Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, is believed to have ordered the elimination of dozens of senior political and military officials in order to reinforce his grip on power.

One of the highest-profile victims of the eradication was Jang Song-thaek, Kim’s uncle. Jang was arrested in December 2013 and executed for no fewer than 24 power abuses or violations of North Korean law.

It includes,

“gnawing at the unity and cohesion of the party” and “dreaming different dreams“.

The Softer Present?

In the past, individuals who were caught helping defectors, were the subject of a show trial, extensive media coverage, and execution “to send a strong message“. However, a recent case in Hoeryong has not led to a public tribunal.

Lately, there have been reports that the North Koreans are becoming more and more cynical about their living conditions as well as their leadership. That discontent has been further fueled by information about the outside world leaking through their progressively porous borders.

“The authorities acknowledge that the residents are going through difficulties and thus are refraining from open trials and executions”,

the Daily NK reported.

“They seem to be aware of the danger of worsening public sentiment. There are many residents who are disillusioned with the regime, even though they do not openly say it, so it is hard to predict how people who are already upset by the lack of food would react if handled brutally”.
